How to Calculate Percentages Quickly (With Examples)

Master percentage calculations with simple mental math tricks

What is a Percentage?

A percentage is simply a fraction out of 100. The word "percent" literally means "per hundred" (from Latin "per centum").

When you say 25%, you're saying "25 out of 100" or 25/100 = 0.25.

The Basic Formula

Percentage = (Part / Whole) × 100

To find what percentage one number is of another

Result = (Percentage / 100) × Number

To find X% of a number

Quick Mental Math Tricks

1. Finding 10% (Easiest)

Just move the decimal point one place left:

  • 10% of 250 = 25
  • 10% of 1,450 = 145
  • 10% of 87 = 8.7

2. Finding 5% (Half of 10%)

Find 10% first, then divide by 2:

  • 5% of 200 = 10% (20) ÷ 2 = 10
  • 5% of 340 = 10% (34) ÷ 2 = 17

3. Finding 1% (Move Decimal Two Places)

Move the decimal point two places left:

  • 1% of 500 = 5
  • 1% of 2,300 = 23

4. Finding 15% (10% + 5%)

Add 10% and 5% together:

  • 15% of 80 = 8 + 4 = 12
  • 15% of 200 = 20 + 10 = 30

5. Finding 20% (10% × 2)

Double the 10% amount:

  • 20% of 150 = 15 × 2 = 30
  • 20% of 450 = 45 × 2 = 90

Real-World Examples

Example 1: Restaurant Tip (15%)

Problem: Your bill is $64. What's a 15% tip?

Solution:

  • 10% of $64 = $6.40
  • 5% of $64 = $3.20 (half of 10%)
  • 15% = $6.40 + $3.20 = $9.60

Example 2: Sale Discount (25% off)

Problem: A $120 jacket is 25% off. How much do you save?

Solution:

  • 25% = 1/4 (quarter)
  • $120 ÷ 4 = $30 savings
  • Final price = $120 - $30 = $90

Example 3: Test Score

Problem: You got 42 out of 50 questions correct. What's your percentage?

Solution:

  • 42/50 = 0.84
  • 0.84 × 100 = 84%

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate percentage increase?

Formula: ((New - Old) / Old) × 100

Example: Price went from $50 to $65

((65 - 50) / 50) × 100 = (15/50) × 100 = 30% increase

How do I calculate percentage decrease?

Same formula! If the result is negative, it's a decrease.

Example: Price dropped from $100 to $80

((80 - 100) / 100) × 100 = -20% = 20% decrease

What's the difference between percentage and percentage point?

If interest goes from 5% to 8%, that's a 3 percentage point increase, but a 60% percentage increase (3/5 = 0.6 = 60%).

Can percentages exceed 100%?

Yes! If something doubles, that's a 100% increase. If it triples, that's a 200% increase.
